A Brief History of Sunglasses and Blue Light Blocking Glasses

Posted by benjamin koren on

The history of sunglasses dates back to ancient civilizations, where sunglasses were worn for functional and decorative purposes. However, the modern concept of sunglasses as we know them today was developed in the early 20th century.

James Ayscough, an Englishman, is credited with inventing the first pair of sunglasses in the 18th century. Ayscough believed that blue light was harmful to the eyes, and he designed glasses with tinted lenses to protect the eyes from blue light. However, these glasses were not designed to block sunlight or protect the eyes from UV radiation.

It wasn't until the 1930s that sunglasses as we know them today were developed. In 1936, sunglasses with lenses that could block both UV radiation and glare were invented by Sam Foster, who began mass-producing them for the general public under the brand name Foster Grant. These sunglasses were a hit and became popular with celebrities, which helped to further popularize the use of sunglasses.

The concept of blue light blocking glasses, also known as computer glasses or gaming glasses, was developed in the early 21st century. These glasses are designed to block or filter out blue light, which is a type of light that is emitted by electronic devices such as computers, smartphones, and televisions, as well as by the sun.

There is no one person or company that can be credited with inventing blue light blocking glasses. Instead, the development of these glasses was the result of a growing body of research on the potential health effects of blue light exposure, as well as the increasing use of electronic devices that emit blue light.

As more people began to use computers and other electronic devices for extended periods of time, it became clear that blue light exposure could lead to a number of negative health effects, including disrupted sleep patterns and digital eye strain. In response to these concerns, a number of companies began to develop blue light blocking glasses as a way to mitigate the potential negative effects of blue light exposure.
